Papers, 1829-1969.

The collection centers on Landon Cabell Garland, professor of math, astronomy, and physics at the universities of Alabama and Mississippi and later chancellor of Vanderbilt University, and his granddaughter, Mary Lightfoot Garland, a public librarian of Lynchburg and Richmond, Va. L.C. Garland's papers consist entirely of typed transcripts and photocopies and include letters, 1830-1893, to his sister, Caroline Matilda (Garland) Garland, and other family members concerning his move to Tuscaloosa, Ala., family news, and his career; a letterbook, 1854-1855, and commonplace book, 1854, kept while he was president of the North East and South West Alabama Railroad Company, and a cookbook, ca. 1870, kept by his wife, Louisa Frances (Garland) Garland in Oxford, Miss. Mary's papers contain correspondence, 1890-1969, with friends and family members and genealogical notes. Her genealogical file for the Garland family includes two volumes of typescripts containing letters, 1874-1891 and 1847-1892, by L.C. Garland's wife and daughters. There is also a prayerbook that belonged to Jane Henry (Meredith) Garland.
